snowy Day at Home
I bought a new camera not too long ago, the canon 7d. One of the big features is that it shoots full manual HD video. Now a lot of photographers have been going nuts over this which makes me think why they were not into video before it was built into their SLR? Video isn’t anything new moving pictures have been around for quite some time, well since about 1895. Any way I digress. Today I was home working doing emails editing photos while it was dumbing snow outside. I figured it would be a good time to play with the video just out in the yard to see what I could get. Link

The first wedding of the new year was on a VERY shall we say brisk day? I don’t think we broke above 0 degrees that day. Needless to say shooting outside was kept to a minimum,I would say less then 3 minutes total outdoors. The decor at the Wilds was lovely so there was no real shortage of good places to shoot. Becky and Louis were a very fun and funny couple we ended up with a ton of great photos with them and their friends.

Cold Faces
Alex Horner and myself went to a feature to shoot with two talented Midwest riders, Willie borm and Austin Torvinen. Austin came down to the cities from Duluth for the weekend to film for his Super Unknown video, we found some really creative things for him to hit all weekend long. We racked up shots quickly and called it a night relatively early due to it being a balmy -5F that night. While we were packing all our gear up I decided to get head shots of everyone there.

Whats been going on?
I have been keeping busy, so busy in fact I haven’t really had time to blog in a while. I shot the SnowBall, which is a very fun event. 5 t0 7 families rent out the ballroom at the St. Paul Hotel and have a big party for them and all of their friends, around 500 people show up. I set up a backdrop, take photos and sell prints there, this year we had a little hiccup at the end. $200 worth of my memory cards were stolen and to top it off, in a rush my assistant left her car lights on so her battery was dead. I didn’t get home that night until 3:40am, somehow I still had a smile on my face and just laughed about it. Stuff happens, move on.
After all of that I had the great fortune to shoot along with Level 1 productions here in Minnesota. Check out their site: www.level1productions.com I think at some point my photos will be up there(EDIT one photo is on there of Liam Downy). Other then shooting with them, I have been able to go out a bit with some local ski talent and shoot some fun features.
Myself, Willis Engelhart and Alex Dutcher, who drove all the way up from Mankato, set out to hit a little fence gap to drop. We park at the top of the hill and got out our shovels and headed down hill only to find a very welcoming…. Someone had their Boxer dog in the park off its leash, the moment it saw us it clearly did not look like it wanted to play nicely. The dog barked and crouched into an attack position and showed its teeth. I slowly backed away not turning from it ready to hit it with the shovel if it came in range. The dog didn’t follow us up to the top of the hill, but rather stayed below and barked at us. We ended up calling the cops who came chained the dog up and as they were leading it away, a kid came up and said “hey, that’s my dog”. The cop told him his dog was attacking people to which the kid denied. In the end the cop told the kid to take the dog home(which he did, but later came back with the dog on a leash). The cop saw our ski boots and asked us if we were sliding the rail,we said no (which wasn’t a lie) and he gave us a reply I wouldn’t have suspected “It’s cool if you are. I would love to see it.” That definitely set the tone for the next 5 hours as we shot carefree on the jump. Dutcher ended up getting some sick rodeo’s over the fence. Enjoy the photos, sorry for all the words.( I think this has more words in it then all my other blogs put together)

Rail Mission Failure
My good friend Steve gave me a call tonight saying that him and our friend Willis were going to hit some handrails in my area. I figured what the heck I need a break from working on papers Lets shoot! After packing up my two bags of gear I headed to the rail which is about 5 minutes from where I live. The plan was to hit a DFD handrail and to get speed for it we would use the Redbull Winch that our most awesome buddie Adam Buck just so happens to have attached to his MTX. Unforutunalty for us the winch would not start for us. We messed around with it for at least an hour if not longer until we decided to call it a night. The night was not a total waste though. Willis and Steve did jib a little rock and I got a couple shots of it. Just goes to show that there is always something fun to do you just have to look around you.

Shooting Dan and Liza’s wedding was a BLAST! They are a fun couple who love to laugh. The reception was on the 50th floor of the IDS Tower in downtown Minneapolis. The breathtaking view made shooting their special day even more enjoyable.

Uvia is a collaboration of 3 talented musicians: Kimberly Coffman on Bass and Vocals, Becah Marzahn on guitar and vocals and James Coffman on drums. Their music is light, fun and VERY catchy. The show was at Eclipses records in St. Paul. In hindsight I should have shot in the shop as well. They have a huge variety of CD’s and records as well as a big arcade in the back with couches and coffee table books. It is a very cool and unique store, definitely worth stopping by if you are in the area.

When I first met Jake and Leja I knew I REALLY wanted to shoot with them. They were a blast to shoot with, from running all over Minnehaha falls to talking about GWAR and Kool Keith. It wasn’t the best weather and by the end of the shoot it was looking like it was going to pour rain but we still ended up with wonderful engagement photos.
